Thank you! I'm glad to hear this inspired you. And I'd be happy to share my tips :)
Personally, I wouldn't have gotten far without the pattern, since I've never crocheted before, so it was worth it for me to buy. I looked through the ones she has and chose to buy only the PeeWee Herman one, since it was the closest to what I wanted for both the boys. It was about $6.50, so a little expensive, but I wouldn't have been able to do much without it (if you already know a basic amigurumi pattern, you might not need it).
For Blaine, I made his jacket just a little longer than the pattern specified, so it went all the way to his crotch. All of the red on the jacket was embroidered over top of it at the end. And I used yarn rather than embroidery floss for the eyebrows (because we all know Darren's are bushy lol).
For Kurt, the biggest change from the pattern was the lapel. Instead of having it go out-in-out like Blaine's (as a suit lapel would), I did all double-crochets across that part to make it rounded. And I also lengthened the jacket a lot from the pattern so it reached his upper thighs.
Also, I had a hard time finding doll eyes/small enough buttons at my local store, so I ended up using black and white brads (those metal push-pins that have the two ends you push apart to keep them in place) for eyes and jacket buttons.
Hope that helps a bit! Good luck with your project, and if you have any questions, let me know! :)
